Today's increasing aging people are likely to cause a few undesirable problems to society, but it should not be viewed as something threatening for the younger population. It is a blessing for any individual to have a long and healthy life, and the blessing should be doubled when families of five or six generations co-exist. The younger generation ought to feel happy for being able to join many a 100th-birthday party other than worry about extra social and economic spending in the future.
There is no denying that dramatically longer lifespan will mean an unexpected burden for the society and the economy. The most obvious would be the costs associated with health measures for the elderly, funding their retirement pensions and providing residential care accommodation. Since governments alone cannot be relied on to carry this burden, they would have no alternative but impose additional income tax on the younger population. Financially speaking, even in more developed countries, the changing age structure might be problematic; besides, there are doubts about the distributions of years of the expected lifespan on the social scale. In terms of employability, if most people live up to 100 years plus and are in good shape, should they re-think their retirements at 65, giving their social roles to younger people? So, for people born in the present century, it remains to be seen the real social outcome of the aging populations.
While the overall effects of prolonged longevity are not clear now, a good amount of optimism abounds. The younger generation can actually benefit from the modern phenomenon of longevity, thanks to the combined efforts of public health measures, disease preventions, improved living conditions and better medical interventions. The valuable contributions that active and healthy aged individuals can make should not be under-estimated. For example, these retired individuals could do, among other things, baby-sitting for their grandchildren, allowing both parents to work longer hours and save on day-care expenses. The extra earnings and savings could in turn be used to improve the family's living standards. In an emotional sense, nothing is more delightful for the young than seeing their parents, grandparents and grand-grandparents, altogether alive and kicking in the extended family.
To sum up, the younger generation should feel positive about people living longer now, enjoying the luxuries and comforts provided by modern science and technology, even though some extra social and economic expenses seem inevitable in the future. People need to work as a great team and believe that all members of the society, young and old, can contribute in diverse ways to the well-being of the whole community. After all, what can the new-born generation think about standing good chances to celebrate their 100th birthdays in the next century? |
