TITLE: CHANGES TO DIMIA MIGRATION RULES
MESSAGE:
Message from Gillian Luck
We realise that the recent announcement by the Federal Minister for Immigration, the Hon Philip Ruddock MP of changes within the general skilled migration category effective from 1 July 2003 has caused considerable concern among the international on-campus student community.
The University has taken these concerns seriously. The Vice-Chancellor has written directly to the Minister for Immigration, the Hon Philip Ruddock MP proposing some amendments to the policy relating to retrospectivity to alleviate current concerns raised by a large section of current international students.
The University has also made direct representations on this issue to the Office of the Education Minister, the Hon Brendan Nelson MP.
The University is also looking at any measures it can take to assist students who may be adversely affected by the changes. The nature of these will be dependent on the response from Minister Ruddock's office which is expected within the next two weeks.
