Economic and Social Research Council / Responsibility in Gambling Trust PhD Studentship

Studentship to investigate understandings of gambling and problem gambling among the Chinese community based in London’s Chinatown.
Anthropology Department, Goldsmiths College
University of London
Applications are invited for a 3-year fully funded ESRC/RIGT Studentship commencing September 2006. Includes full payment of fees at the UK/EU rate plus 3-year maintenance grant.
The project
Existing research into problem gambling draws a distinction between gamblers and problem gamblers based on screenings that are insensitive to cultural distinctiveness. This research will complement these approaches by providing data that is based on long term participant observation by a researcher who is embedded within the community. The research will map the variety of gambling activities and the locations in which they take place amongst the Chinese community in London, primarily in Chinatown. Research questions to be considered might include: What is gambling? What does gambling mean to different people and groups? What is problem gambling? How is it understood within a particular cultural milieu (a betting shop or a front room in Chinatown)? How do ordinary gamblers become problem gamblers? How are they treated by their peers and by their families, colleagues and the state? What is their personal experience of problem gambling? How can policy makers and research users take these reactions and motivations into account when they devise legislation and treatment programmes? The above questions are only indicative and may be adapted as the PhD research evolves. The proposed research will begin with an extensive review of the literature on gambling and problem gambling, before progressing to fieldwork.
The student will become part of a larger research project to be conducted within the Anthropology Department by Dr Rebecca Cassidy. The project will include an investigation into the distinction between gambling and problem gambling in betting shops in south-east London and an international conference to take place at Goldsmiths in 2009. Rebecca Cassidy has conducted extensive fieldwork in the thoroughbred racing and breeding industries, as well as in betting shops and on racecourses in Britain and the United States (see, for example, The Sport of Kings: Kinship, class and thoroughbred breeding in Newmarket. Cambridge, 2002).
The applicant
In line with ESRC recommendations on recruitment, we anticipate that the successful applicant will have completed a recognised postgraduate research training programme, or can demonstrate that the level of training already undertaken is in line with the requirements set out by the ESRC.

The student will begin their course of study in September 2006, and begin fieldwork the following year after a period of intensive preparation. During fieldwork they will attend fortnightly meetings with their supervisor and keep an extensive diary. In addition, their progress will be overseen by a Research Advisory Committee (RAC), in accordance with current departmental policy. After fieldwork, as well as meeting regularly with their supervisor and RAC, they will attend writing up and research seminars within the department. They will submit their thesis after three years. During their third year, as well as writing up, the student will assist in organising the international conference that will take place in 2009.

The deadline for applications is the end of June 2006.
Informal enquires about this studentship are welcomed and should be directed to Dr Rebecca Cassidy ([email protected]; telephone: 0207 919 7802).
Application is by way of a form which may be obtained from the Postgraduate Secretary in Anthropology: Miss Natalie Hawes (e-mail: [email protected] or telephone 0207 919 7800). Alternatively, applications may be submitted on-line via: http://www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/study-options/...search-pack.pdf
