how to do the police check

       I applied for PR last year and my student visa just expired feww days ago  then  yestoday immigration called to ask me to do the police check... does that means criminal records? or property or finaical background...

and is that any public security department can do it ? does not matter if its small one in town or big one in  the city ??

(this computer cant type chinese ..sorry)
