In 2000, the Accounting faculty at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) ranked 1st in the world in research articles published in the top five academic journals. HKUST is one of only seven accounting programs worldwide to consistently rank among the top ten during the past three years, with Chicago, Columbia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Stanford, and UC Berkeley (Panel 1).
The five journals surveyed are Journal of Accounting Research (University of Chicago), Journal of Accounting and Economics (University of Rochester), The Accounting Review (American Accounting Association), Contemporary Accounting Research (Canadian Academic Accounting Association), and Review of Accounting Studies (UC Berkeley). The first three journals were used by The Financial Times in their recent global ranking of business programs. HKUST Accounting faculty also published in the leading journals of other fields, including American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Management Science.
The most widely accepted method for counting publications is author weighted, where each co-author of a study receives a proportional share of credit (Panel 1). By this count, HKUST Accounting achieved a score of 4 in the top five journals in 2000, topping the list along with UC Berkeley. Runners up were Cornell (3.75 points), Indiana (3.67 points), and Columbia (3.5 points). If publications are counted by affiliation, giving each affiliation one point without regard to multiple co-authors from a given school, HKUST ranks 3rd with 6 points, behind Indiana (8 points) and Cornell (7 points) (Panel 2). Alternatively, if publications are counted by giving each author affiliation one point, regardless of the number of authors, HKUST Accounting again tops the list, with Cornell, Indiana, and Ohio State (Panel 3). Thus, HKUST ranks among the top in the world regardless of the count.
Branding this as one of the major achievements of HKUST in its first decade, Prof Chia-Wei Woo, President of HKUST, said: "Many people now know that HKUST has a very good Business School, the quality of which is recognized by world-renowned organizations such as the International Association for Management Education, the European Foundation for Management Development, and The Financial Times. But they may not know that the individual disciplines of the School have also achieved high stature in their own rights. The achievement of our Accounting colleagues is a very nice addition to a list of growing accolades of the School and the University as a whole. Hong Kong is the most important financial center of this hemisphere; it is appropriate that it has an Accounting Department whose research ranks first in the world."
Prof K C Chan, Acting Dean of HKUST Business School, said: "Getting even one paper published in a top academic journal is the most rewarding achievement for any faculty. I am very proud of this excellent collective achievement by our Accounting colleagues."
Prof Gary Biddle, Associate Dean of the Business School and Head of the Accounting Department, said: "We are very proud that the hard work of our faculty has led to this prestigious ranking. Accounting research is sophisticated and spans various topic areas. The knowledge generated by our faculty creates value for our students, for Hong Kong, for China, and for accounting professionals worldwide. Through our faculty, many of whom are excellent teachers, our students are prepared and equipped with the best skills and knowledge for the rapidly developing global economy."
Prof Biddle further noted that, "HKUST's prominence in accounting research has also enhanced our teaching. In fact, I am very proud that the Department of Accounting at HKUST has won numerous teaching awards. Our research-based teaching gives our students cutting-edge insights that won't appear in textbooks for another ten years. It's a great advantage for our graduates that employers very much appreciate. We offer the same cutting edge insights to Hong Kong professionals to hone their competitive advantage."
