A taxi driver at the airport had been asked by police to move his taxi about 7.30am, but refused, according to the AFP.
"The AFP arrested one man after he refused a police direction to move his vehicle," an AFP spokesman
"The man allegedly became violent and was subdued by AFP officers."
Between 50 and 100 drivers then staged a protest, refusing to take passengers from the pickup area.
The situation had returned to normal, a spokeswoman for the AFP said.
Police would not say why the driver was asked to move his vehicle or whether its position posed a security threat.
He is being questioned by police but has not been charged.
An oversupply of taxis at the airport this morning had led to the incident, a spokeswoman for the NSW Taxi Service said.
"There was a traffic flow issue that resulted in an altercation, but I don't know who between," she said.
A taxi driver at the terminal, who did not wish to be named, told smh.com.au police had used "excessive force" on a driver following an accident between a taxi and a police vehicle.
"So all taxi drivers are now on strike," he said.
