Mauna Kea是大岛上的最高峰（4200米），不过如果从海底算得话高度超过了一万米，所以也有人说Mauna Kea是世界第一高峰。因为Hawaii远离所有的大陆，岛上有没有工业，Mauna Kea的顶峰就成为了建立天文观测站的最佳地点。如果你的车是4WD, Mauna Kea的峰顶是可以直接开上去的。到Mauna Kea山顶看日落是我们这次的目标之一，为此还特意租了辆Jeep。总算老天照顾让我们完成了心愿。
