据了解，起初，动物园负责人让“艾迪”训练投球的目的就是为了治疗“艾迪”的关节炎，可万万没想到的是，“艾迪”在水中投球运动中竟展现出惊人的天赋。动物园海獭饲养员领班詹妮•格鲁特(Jenny DeGroot)表示，“‘艾迪’既聪明又敏捷，非常适合水中投球，并且在这项运动中蕴藏着巨大的潜能，几乎是百投百中。”值得一提的是，通过坚持不懈的训练，“艾迪”患有的关节炎也得到了治愈。

据相关背景资料显示，由于海獭不经常使用前腿游泳，因此水中投球运动确实能够有效治疗海獭前腿的关节炎症。
