Non-local students, including those from the Mainland must obtain a visa in order to study in Hong Kong. Without a valid visa, they cannot register for their study in the University. The student visa will also enable students to enter Hong Kong as students.
Applications should be made well in advance at a Chinese Embassy or Consulate or by writing directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department, 2/F Immigration Tower, 7 Gloucester Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong. Applicants will be required to show sufficient financial resources to cover expenses for their period of study.
Applicants must nominate a sponsor who is resident in Hong Kong, aged over 21, to whom they are known personally. Applicants who have difficulty in nominating a sponsor in Hong Kong may indicate on their visa applications that the University's Director of Admissions, Registration and Records is willing to act in this capacity.
Students from Mainland China should note that new procedures for obtaining an entry permit have come into effect from mid-July 2003. Mainland students undertaking full-time studies in tertiary institutions in Hong Kong will now travel to Hong Kong SAR using the Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau issued by their local Public Security Bureau. The Admissions, Registration and Records Office (ARRO) of the University, on receiving the duly-signed acceptance letter and the completed entry permit application returned by the student and, if applicable, the appropriate tuition fee deposit, will apply to the Hong Kong Immigration Department for the issuance of an entry permit on behalf of the student. The entry permit, in the form of a sticker label, once sent to ARRO by the Hong Kong Immigration Department, will be posted to the student concerned. The student should then take the entry permit label to the appropriate Public Security Bureau for the Exit-entry Permit for Traveling to and from Hong Kong and Macau to be issued. This new process will significantly shorten the time required for obtaining the necessary travel documents to come to Hong Kong. It is anticipated that the entire process will now take about 8 to 10 weeks (compared to 3 to 5 months previously).
