recruitment of the University of Wollongong, Peter Day.
He has explained the situation to me.
About four weeks ago, the University detected a number of fraudulent
offer letters, which the university had issued, but which had been altered
subsequently. The forgeries were discovered when three students
contacted the University to transfer their offer to a different course.
In order to protect its reputation and integrity, the University
contacted the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs
(DIMA), who advised the Australian embassy in Beijing that fradulent
offer letters for the university had been found.
Since that time, the embassy has been scrutinising all offers made
to the University of Wollongong and Wollongong University College,
and has sent lists of applicants to the Admissions Unit to verify that the
offer letters are genuine.
Two weeks ago a number of key staff from the embassy were
absent at a briefing for several days, and no offers could be processed.
Now that all DIMA staff have returned to Beijing, we expect offer
letters to be processed as normal, though the backlog may take some
time to clear.
While this verification process has resulted in delays to visa
processing for our applicants, it is of the utmost importance that the
University of Wollongong ensure that it assists the Australian
government in upholding the integrity of the student visa program.
It is the University's responsibility to combat corrupt practices, and
to ensure that its name is not tarnished by a small minority of
non-genuine visa applicants.

note that she cannot personally intervene in any case, but she will monitor
and report to the embassy on any delays that we experience."
