正所谓“人间珠宝何足取，宜兴紫砂最要得”。紫砂壶，曾是中国特有的手工制造陶土工艺品，现也有机器大批量制造的。制作原料为紫砂泥，原产地在江苏宜兴，又名宜兴紫砂壶。其起源可上溯到春秋时代的越国大夫范蠡，已有2400多年的历史。从明武宗正德年间以来紫砂开始制成壶，名家辈出，500年间不断有精品传世。据说紫砂壶的创始人是中国明朝的供春。紫砂壶的特点是不夺茶香气又无熟汤气，壶壁吸附茶气，日久使用空壶里注入沸水也有茶香。
紫砂泥料原深藏于岩石层下，分布于甲泥的泥层之间，矿层厚度几十公分到一米左右，其化学成分为含铁质粘土粉砂岩。紫泥主要矿物成分为水云母，及不等量的高岭岩、石英、云母屑和铁。
从矿层中开采出的紫砂，俗称生泥。似块状岩石，经露天摊晒风化，使其松散，然后经初碎、粉碎，按产品要求的颗粒数目，送风筛选。筛选后的泥灰，由搅拌机搅拌成一块块泾泥，经堆放陈腐处理，再把腐泥进行真空练泥，这样便成为供制坯用的熟泥。在紫砂泥练和制备过程中，所用水的水质十分讲究。水质的优劣会直接影响产品的质量。紫砂泥可塑性好，生坯强度高，坯的干燥、烧成收缩率小。为丰富紫砂隐的外观色泽，满足工艺变化和制作设计的要求，工艺师们大胆地进行技术创新，把几种泥料以不同配比混合，在泥料中加入适度的金属氧化物着色剂，控制好窑内的温度和气氛，产品烧成后，五光十色，或紫而不姹，或红而不嫣，或绿而不嫩，或黄而不娇，或灰而不暗，或黑而不墨。紫砂器的色泽，犹如染在毛纺织品上的颜色，沉着而没有火气；仔细观察，各种泥色裹又有星星白砂，如银粉闪闪，是光映射，宛若珠玑。有时在泥中和以粗泥砂或钢砂，更为夺目。近年来，还试制成功了带有自然光泽的红色和青铜色盖面浆，别开泥色装饰的新面目。紫砂陶，简称紫砂，又叫紫砂器或紫砂陶器。紫砂茶具，造型简练、大方，色泽淳朴、古雅。用其泡茶，使用的年代越久，壶身色泽就愈加光润古雅，泡出来的茶汤也就越醇郁芳馨，甚至在空壶里注入沸水都会有一股清淡的茶香。根据科学分析，紫砂壶确实保有茶汤原味的功能，它能吸收茶汁，而且具有耐冷耐热的特性。
